    Opus Hotel Revamped-2
[Michael Miller poses with a piece from his The Nintendo Generation collection]

Local interior designer Robert Bailey is behind the Opus Hotel Vancouver’s recent move to bolder, brighter, and just a tad cheekier rooms at the Yaletown boutique hotel. Inspired by the designs of the 70’s, five fictional hotel guests were created to give each room a unique flavour and character.

There’s Mike, the New York City doctor: his room features faux snakeskin headboards and pops of raspberry red décor. 23 year-old artist Michael Miller is taken with the nostalgia of early gaming. Some of his best early childhood memories involve Nintendo playing with his family. The pixelated style is perfectly suited for the Mike room.

    Grain Tasting Bar-1

Last night, I was invited to the opening of Vancouver’s newest lounge space, Grain Tasting Bar. Drawing its name from the reclaimed wood doors and accents located throughout, this new downtown player offers smoked wood-fired pizzas, salads, crafted sandwiches, charcuterie and cheese, and shared plates, all created with local ingredients.

    Grain Tasting Bar-3
    [Pear and ginger margarita]

Grain is located inside the Hyatt Regency Vancouver’s lobby, its entrance chic and urban. It’s the perfect spot to grab a light meal or drinks before heading upstairs to dine at Chef Thomas Heinrich’s other venue, Mosaic Bar and Grille.

Grain Tasting Bar-4 Grain Tasting Bar-5 Grain Tasting Bar-14

The salads on the menu are under the Lettuce section; a couple of salad choices that stand out are the Gelderman Farms pulled roasted pork and crispy kale salad, with Klippers organic butternut squash, apple, pea greens with apple vinaigrette, as well as the seared Vancouver Island Albacore tuna salad with farm tomatoes, arugula, and cucumber vinaigrette.

    Grain Tasting Bar-12

On the charcuterie side, house-made duck proscuitto, Toscano proscuitto, and Okanagan salted and dried Sezmu beef are delicious choices to pair with Little Qualicum Cheesework’s Brie, Olde Farmer raw cow’s milk cheese, and Salt Spring Island Cheese’s Romelia. Softly-scented truffle honey, candied walnuts, pickles and other lovely accompaniments make the cheese and charcuterie experience complete here.

    Grain Tasting Bar-10

Local suppliers such as Oyama Sausage, Gelderman Farms Pork, Skuna Bay Salmon, plus several craft brewers, wine makers and distillers keep Grain’s dishes high in both quality and sustainability.

The space captures a lot of natural daylight and looks equally imposing at night, offering city street views with lush trees outside the window.

In summer, the windows slide open to integrate the outdoors into the lounge, a creative, cutting-edge window design by Sunflex.

I especially like the bar’s colouring and design. The shimmery ceiling reflects the lighting and bar stools below, almost adding a water-like quality. Everything from inventive cocktails, BC wines, and craft beer begin their journey here, in a beautiful space designed by California firm EDG Architecture.

    Grain Tasting Bar-6

The cocktail list is equally fun and inventive: Cherry and Basil Margaritas, Bangkok Mules, Ginger Pear Martinis (my favourite–so far), Poet’s Reach, and Ruby Tuesday are just a few on offer. Hand-made, small batch Victoria gin, including concoctions from Long Table Distillery, the city’s first micro distillery, find their home here as well.

    Grain Tasting Bar-8

Beers are available on tap and in bottles (both domestic and imported). You’ll feel at home with the BC red and wine listings, including Burrowing Owl Merlot, Quail’s Gate Pinot Noir, Mission Hill’s ‘Five Vineyards’ Cabernet/Merlot, Sumac Ridge’s unoaked Chardonnay, Prospect Winery’s Pinot Blanc, Haywire’s Gamay Noir-Rose and others. All wines are available either by the glass or bottle and range from $9 to $16/glass.

Judging from the last night’s scene, this will become the spot to hang your hat (or laptop bag) for some serious unwinding. Kudos to Chef Heinrich and his team for putting together yet another spot to celebrate simply delicious food and drink.

Grain Tasting Bar is located at 655 Burrard Street and is open daily from 11 am to 1 am.

    Craigdarroch Castle-11

It’s funny how many people I came across in Victoria who live there yet haven’t been to Craigdarroch Castle. After all, this Canadian National Historic Site sits atop Fort Street, a brisk 20-minute walk up from Victoria’s landmark harbour.

    Craigdarroch Castle-1

On my recent trip, I decided that a visit to the 39-room castle was in order. While city tours do include this attraction as part of a package, I opted to go solo and make my way to Craigdarroch for a self-guided visit.

Constructed between 1887 and 1890, Craigdarroch Castle was built for coal magnate Robert Dunsmuir. Craigdarroch refers to “rocky, oak place” in Gaelic. Dunsmuir wanted to show off his wealth by building this massive Victorian mansion on the top of the city, using internationally-sourced building components.

Spanish mahogany, Hawaiian koa, and other exotic woods such as walnut, rosewood, jarra and oak are all used throughout the 21 acre estate, now diminished to a city-respectable 1.75 acre lot. Back in the day, visitors to the castle could enjoy walking along several paths, a stream, and meadow.

    Craigdarroch Castle-2

The curious door is actually made from curved wood; you’ll notice this one-of-a-kind door the moment you walk inside the castle.

Looking up inside the entrance leads your eyes to an imposing staircase and beautiful stained glass windows, some of the finest in North America.

    Craigdarroch Castle-3

Robert Dunsmuir was originally from Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, born into a family of coal masters (renting mines from land-owning aristocracy). His future wife Joanna was born in the same town. They married in 1847; at that time, Joanna shortened her name to to Joan Olive.

They took a three year leave to work for Hudson’s Bay Company, sailing from Scotland around Cape Horn to Vancouver Island in a voyage that lasted 214 days. There’s a long, interesting story that leads in so many directions, including the Castle’s later use as a military hospital for WWI veterans, Victoria College, and the Victoria Conservatory of Music. The saddest tale is that Robert died over a year before the castle’s completion, never able to enjoy the fruits of his labour.

    Craigdarroch Castle-4

When the Conservatory finally vacated in the late 1970’s, the Castle was converted into a historic house museum. The Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society purchased the property from the City of Victoria, and currently maintains a staff of 14 with well over 100 volunteers, continually serving to restore this precious landmark.

    Craigdarroch Castle-7 Craigdarroch Castle-6

As you walk through the rooms, there’s so many details to admire, from the lighting to the windows. Victorian-era furnishings and costumes add to the atmosphere, while a few rooms remain bare and ready for restoration.

    Craigdarroch Castle-5 Craigdarroch Castle-9 Craigdarroch Castle-10 Craigdarroch Castle-8

Luckily, the Castle receives over 150,000 visitors annually, helping to cover costs. Craigdarroch Castle is located at 1050 Joan Crescent in Victoria.

    The Fish Shack-1

The Fish Shack has been open just shy of two months now, and I finally had the chance to visit over lunch this week.

What I like about this restaurant is the attention to detail, particularly when it comes to oysters. An entire fresh sheet is dedicated to selecting your oysters (plus the catch of the day). Just look for the red FS stamp over the fish and oyster choices on offer.

Buck-a-shuck is available from opening until 5 pm daily. This deal also includes some of the premium oysters, depending on what’s in fresh that day. Two oyster pros on rotating shifts help answer questions customers have about oysters. Think of Todd Atkinson and Ian Peck as your oyster stewards! During lunch, I learned that premium oysters differ from regular ones in one way: the premiums are not beach oysters. Premiums also have little to do with size.

The Fish Shack: Executive Chef Alfred Contiga with oyster man Todd Atkinson
[Executive Chef Alfred Contiga with oyster man Todd Atkinson]

Speaking of pros, Ian Peck came in 4th place in the 2008 World Oyster Shucking Competition, after winning First Place in the Canadian Championship. That translates to perfectly shucking 18 oysters in 1:05 minutes!

    The Fish Shack-8

10 years ago, Ian worked at Rodney’s Oyster House in Toronto, served as Rodney’s Vancouver’s in-house champion for two years, later joining the Chewies team in Kitsilano before landing at The Fish Shack. Todd was an original partner at Rodney’s, and most recently the owner of Todd’s on 6th, a small café off Granville Street. When he learned of Glowbal Group’s plans to open a fish restaurant with an oyster bar, he couldn’t pass up the chance.

    Truffles Bistro-1
    [Truffles Bistro interior]

The fun part of a visit to a new city is discovering its local food and dining scene. Saskatoon isn’t the largest of Canadian cities, but it provides a decent variety of eateries in and around its downtown core, along and off Broadway, and Riversdale (currently being redeveloped while its heritage buildings are preserved).

I dined one evening at Truffles Bistro, one of the city’s favourite gourmet spots. Chef de Cuisine Lee Helman sources high quality Saskatchewan and Canadian products for his French dishes. The restaurant is located on the street level of Birks jewelers in the heart of Saskatoon. The atmosphere is warm and casual, with antiques, heritage-era photos, and soft lighting to complement its warm white walls.

Although not pictured here, I started with a local tomato salad ($13) featuring fresh basil granite, baked herb goat cheese, greens, Saskatchewan flax oil, and 18 year old balsamic vinegar. The basil granite was sublime and needed to be eaten quickly to keep its icy texture. Together with the goat cheese, this dish hit the spot!

    Truffles Bistro-2

Local Diefenbaker Steelhead Trout ($28) was the first entrée that caught my eye, served pan-seared with shoestring potatoes, lemon, dill crème fraîche, and asparagus. Divine, along with an Angels Gate Pinot noir, its bouquet rich with spices and white pepper. I also tasted black plum and dried fruit on the palate with this Niagara-area red.

    Truffles Bistro-3

A simple dessert of maple ice cream with berries and dark chocolate completed this wonderful first night in town dining experience.

Truffles Bistro is located at 230 21st East in Saskatoon and is open for lunch on Monday to Friday, dinner from 5 pm to closing, and weekend brunch from 10 to 2:30 on Saturday and until 2 pm on Sunday.

Las Palapas Resort Grill makes the most delicious quesadillas I’ve tasted so far in Canada. I chose citrus chicken, with spinach, mozzarella and salsa fresca ($12). There’s a wealth of speciality plates, mole dishes, tacos, tortas, enchiladas, and burritos available. I wish they’d bring their creations to Vancouver. The atmosphere is lively with colourful walls, tile, and a build-you-own pozole condiments bar (pozole is a traditional soup served daily in Mexico).

    Ford Escape Launch-1

I was invited to spend an entire day out with Ford Canada, on the last stop of their 2013 Escape SUV launch tour yesterday. The gorgeous stretch of late summer weather added to the fun-filled day. We set out in teams of two in sparkly new Ford Escape 2013′s to experience its road handling, convenience features, and state-of-the-art technology.

Ford Escape Launch-2 Ford Escape Launch-11

Starting at the Delta Burnaby Hotel, we were greeted by the Ford media team, and given an introduction to the day’s activities as well as an ample hot lunch spread. Little did I know that one in six customers purchase an SUV, and that Ford’s Escape happens to be ranked #1 in Canada for eight years running.

    Escape interior

Savvy consumers look for practical features as well as safety and fuel efficiency. This one offers some pretty amazing cargo space and the 2013 model has been totally redesigned from the ground up with a larger interior, better fuel efficiency, a new overdrive system and several components made of recycled material.

    Ford Escape Launch-3

For example, 25% percent of the carpeting is made of reused plastic bottles, taking millions of bottles out of landfill each year. Soybeans are used in the seat and headrests. Ford strives to find better ways to build their cars smarter.

    Ford Escape Launch-6

We first drove to Coquitlam Centre to test our skills and play at the Escape Cargo Challenge tents, create an action video (I chose skydiving and hope to post a link to the video soon), try hands-free parking, and socialize with one another over snacks and coffee.

    Ford Escape Launch-5

This was also the spot where we tested the Escape’s hands-free lift gate feature. With a simple kicking motion gesture, the system is activated and pop goes the back gate! It’s programmed to recognize leg motions only (and is customizable to individual needs), so as to avoid accidental opening of the gate by way of a bump on the road or an animal passing by! This technology builds onto Ford’s Intelligent Access push-button start.

    Ford Escape Launch-4

Interesting to note that Ford is the first to use gesture-based technology in this spunky, durable SUV. So no fumbling for keys once you’re in the Escape.

    Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-12

We hadn’t been to Ucluelet in about four years and recall having seen Black Rock Oceanfront Resort nearly open for business as we lodged at a nearby B&B back then.

    Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-1

Fast-forward four years later, and the resort is fully operational, filled with beautiful local artwork and a gorgeous interior complete with designer furnishings and a commanding view of the sea.

    Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-27

My husband was lucky enough to have won a two night stay here. We added a third night, as getting to the coast involves the better part of the day to reach by ferry and drive across the island on the beautiful Pacific Rim Highway.

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-3 Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-6

We checked into our one bedroom suite surrounded by pools, sea, and forest.

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-5 Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-20

The resort connects to part of the Wild Pacific Trail in the middle of a rainforest. We enjoyed a few walks here after our breakfasts.

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-22 Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-23 Black Rock Oceanfront Resort-24

Floor-to-ceiling windows allow full views of nature, no matter what part of the resort you’re staying in. At once we felt at peace amongst the old growth trees, all accessible via our deck.
