    VACC Kick Off Poster

After years of surveying, strategizing, and designing, the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC) has a new name, logo, and look. Vancouverites are invited to the kick-off party on April 28.

The organization is really proud of how they’ve grown over the past 14 years, with programming to educate, motivate, and celebrate people getting out on their bikes. This new identity is a reflection of where they are now – the cycling resource in Metro Vancouver – a reliable, respected, welcoming and fun organization that knows how to push cycling for transportation to the next level.

    VACC Kick-Off Party
Date: Saturday April 28th, 1 to 4 pm
Venue: Woodward’s Atrium, 111 West Hastings Street, Vancouver
Activities: Bike rodeo, bike decorating station, face painting, unicycle station, prizes, bike mechanic, and more!

Reception to follow with Momentum photo booth at 5 pm. The best dressed cyclista wins a prize!

Starting April 16, look for the new VACC headquarters at 1-828 West 8th, a block and a half west of the Heather bike route, in between bike routes on 7th and 10th Streets. Come and say hi! You’ll see their snazzy new place set with its new look.

On May 12, Comor – Go Play Outside, BC’s newest full service bike shops, presents VanFondo, a new ride in support of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. VanFondo is a group social ride for bike-minded individuals to ride an escorted two hour street course with cycling celebrities, enthusiasts, and athletes. This casual, social ride and get together will bring together the cycling community.

This is not a race event, and entry is by a minimum $10 donation to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Canuck Place provides specialized pediatric palliative care for children living with a life-threatening illness and support for their families throughout BC. Your donation will not only help the hospice, but will include post-ride snacks, refreshments, cycling information clinics and activities provided by the ‘best brands in the industry’.

The event is described as “a gorgeous, two hour escorted scenic group ride through beautiful Vancouver.” The guide will lead riders through Downtown Vancouver and East Vancouver, across the city to UBC and back through the Kitsilano corridor.

Participants are welcome and encouraged to bring their road bikes, commuter/hybrid models, and mountain bikes (especially 29′ers).

A couple of things to know:

Can I register on the day of the event?
Absolutely. VanFondo will accept donations and registration on site on event day.

    Can I bring my children?

What do I need to bring?
You, your bike, and a helmet. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

    Monsoon Pro Tour bags

Axiom’s always been known for its solid range of bike panniers and accessories, as our six year old red Monsoons can attest to. I wanted to see how Axiom had improved the Monsoon over the years, and with Vancouver Bike to Work Week nearly here (starting October 31), I thought this would make a great time to review their current Monsoon Pro Tour bags.

Last weekend, my husband and I attended the 1st Annual Vancouver Bike Show at the new Vancouver Convention Centre. The show was part of the much larger Vancouver Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show. Cycling has become popular in Vancouver, with a growing number of dedicated cycling lanes and a culture that fosters two-wheel commuting.

As summer continues on in Vancouver (now complete with sunshine), I continually seek out well-designed and useful accessories to get me around town in style and promote cycling as a daily event rather than a workout.

I was recently sent a beautiful Sawako Furuno Hanabi style helmet to road test and review. Sawako Furuno is a UK-based cycle accessory and clothing label for women. Furuno, originally from Tokyo, is a trained architect who has always been passionate about design. As a regular London cyclist, she was keen to design products that would stand out from the typical range of unattractive cycling accessories and apparel. “The brand is about being feminine, stylish and having fun on your bike”, according to Cycle Fashion.
